OpenAI announces ‘o3’ reasoning models

OpenAI has announced a new generation of reasoning models, which will act as successors to the existing o1 reasoning models. Christened ‘o3’ (and not o2 due to strange trademark issues), the new models are claimed by OpenAI to be approaching ‘AGI’ — Artificial General Intelligence. And while that may not be true in all instances, the very fact that o3 models can reach AGI levels in even smaller instances, is remarkable, to say the least.

As has been the case with its previous models, the o3 is also a series of models — there’s the main o3 and then the o3-mini, a smaller model which would be adept at performing specific, smaller tasks.

Intel plans to lay off over 500 in Oregon amid financial and AI stress

Intel is planning to lay off more than 500 employees in Oregon (where its largest site in the world is located) this month. The company will permanently eliminate 529 positions across four facilities in Washington County (including campuses in Aloha and Hillsboro), reports Bloomberg (citing a recent WARN notice filed with state authorities). The layoffs are scheduled to begin during the two-week period starting July 15, 2025. The company, which is one of Oregon’s largest private employers, currently has around 20,000 workers in the state. The upcoming layoffs will hit all major campuses in Oregon and several business areas, including around 300 engineering roles.
